THE CRANMOG CHRONICLES EDITION No 5 Summer 2010

Secretary’s Note:

Welcome to the Summer edition of the Cranmog Chronicles. The summer events are well and truly under way and CranMoggers have been seen at many and various events up and down the country and overseas.

MOG2010 in Buxton was a great event, enjoyed by all. A full report will be in Miscellany but a Cranmog specific report appears at the end of this issue.

CranMoggers have been invited by Steve Webster, a new member, to display their Morgans at the Friends and Family Open Day at RAF Marham on Thursday 12 August. Full details on page 7.

Some members have expressed an interest in a midweek daytime outing. I would like to propose a visit to Capel Manor Gardens in Enfield. Please contact me soon if this is of interest to you.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this issue. I look forward to more reports and pictures for future editions.

Finally, I would ask that you complete the attached survey and return it as soon as possible in the SAE provided (UK residents only). If you receive this newsletter electronically, then please follow the link in the Email, it will only take a couple of minutes to complete. This will enable the club to more easily satisfy the requirements of its members and hopefully you will benefit from the results.

CRANMOG SPRING SAUNTER Sunday 11 April

By Philip Loring
The 11th April was a fine and sunny Sunday when 17 Cars arrived at the Waggoners Public House in Ayot Green for the first Cranmog Spring Saunter. After coffee & biscuits the participants set off at 2 minute intervals on a 40 mile prescribed route through the villages of North Hertfordshire.

Philip & Linda were the event organisers and they had planned a very pretty route through the Ayots, Whitwell, Preston, Wheathampstead, Welwyn Garden City, Tewin, Digswell, Knebworth & Codicote. Despite many members knowing the area quite well, there were quite a few route deviations through missed turnings!

Route instructions included some local historical detail which was very interesting even for those that knew the area well. There were the usual driver navigator arguments during the morning and in some cases the navigators were so interested in reading the historical details, that they for got to tell the driver where to turn!

There were no mishaps and everyone arrived back safely to the Waggoners for a well earned lunch. Top score for the Navigator quiz was Jim & Vanessa Barham.

No doubt this very successful event will become a regular in our calendar.

MK CLASSIC CAR TOUR
SUNDAY 25 april

18 Morgan’s took part in this event which was a superb day although the weather was ‘iffish’. Drivers enjoyed the opportunity of taking their cars around the Millbrook test track and also visiting the Porsche experience at Silverstone. In all £7700 was raised for the Willen Hospice.

MENDIPS IX 7TH-9TH MAY
By John Barry

After suffering the worst winter for some 30 years it was good to get the trusty Morgan’s out for an early season run. On May 7th we witnessed a mass migration from the Cranmog local area (stretching from Yorkshire, Norfolk, Cambs and Beds and also included our overseas representatives from Holland – Gerard and Marianne) to descend upon the village of Landford, Somerset. Our generous hosts and organisers for the weekend, the 9th Annual Mendip event, was Terry and Jan Wilson who made us all most welcome on the Friday at ‘Chez Nous’……for some this was a chic French restaurant and dressed accordingly! In truth it was an excellent on-site fry up of some 90 plus bags of piping hot fish and chips which has become the traditional Friday night special on this event washed down with copious amounts of the local Somerset brew. An excellent garage party!
The weather was not on our side but with hoods down in true ‘Cranmog’ style some 40 plus Morgan’s departed Langford on the Saturday morning with a couple of surprises in store. Apart from the beautiful scenery – the run up Coombe hill, even in the rain, was quite spectacular - the first stop was a visit to the Haynes Motor International Museum at Sparkford, Yeovil, Someset. Much larger than most envisaged and rated as the UK’s largest exhibition of the greatest cars from around the world, complete with a couple of Morgans on display. Laurie Povey, you would have loved the red room….all reds together!

There was a little trip down memory lane for most when viewing the classics of ‘yesteryear’ but none more so than for Margret Keech who was reunited with a magnificent example of an Austin Six which brought back many memories of her younger days living in South Africa – who said “nostalgia’s not what is used to be?”

The second pleasant surprise was the lunchtime stop at the Stags Head Inn - to be highly recommended. The excellent lunchtime spread was presented in true Somerset style – generous portions, a wonderful selection of fresh local produce, meats and cheeses. It was during the savouring of this delight that some ‘wag’ spotted a sign not being utilised to its full potential.Placed in front of the Morgans it said "For Sale"

After an excellent gala night at the Lyncombe Lodge, the Sunday scenic run was a gentle meander through the Wiltshire and Somerset borders and included a visit to the local reservoir and the National Trust property at Stourhead House, the home of the Hoare family for many years. The weather was not at its best but no one could fault the organisation and hard work by Terry and Janet who made the weekend very special for us all. The final fond goodbyes were made at yet another first class ‘watering hole’ – the Strode Arms at West Cranmore.

Husborne Crawley Fete
Saturday 22 May

Thirteen Morgans were displayed in front of the Queen Anne House for this annual event, in aid of the St James’ Church Restoration fund, for which a grand total of £1,752 was raised. There was a dancing display by the local children along with the usual stalls. The Punch & Judy show in particular proved very popular with Cranmog members as well as the children. Cream teas and Pimms were enjoyed by those in attendance.

Can everyone please put in their diaries the date for next year, the Centenary of the last serious makeover of St James' by Duke Herbrand and the parishioners, which will be held on Saturday 21st May, 2011, (from 1.40 p.m. for those wishing to park their lovely cars in front of the house)? This should be an extra special day: the thinking is to lend the air of an Edwardian Garden Party to it (dressing appropriately to be encouraged - pretty hats, long skirts, parasols* for the ladies; boaters, blazers & flannels for the chaps).

(*A good source is the shop at Woburn Abbey!)

This would be along with displays in the Church that week-end (subject to agreement from the Vicar and Wardens). Possibilities for the latter would be Wedding Photographs (all generations) from Crawley residents, and a display of Christening robes - from Crawley and the wider community. All ideas welcome.

Thank you and hope to see you all next year, Priscilla.

LETCHWORTH VINTAGE & CLASSIC CAR CLUB
21ST ANNIVERSARY PICNIC HALLS GREEN
SATURDAY 5 JUNE
By Sally Rolfe

Saturday 5 June 2010, at the Letchworth Car Club Picnic, turned into one of those Hazy Lazy Days of Summer.

A good Mix of classic cars turned up, from a 1914 Model T Ford to the later Morgan’s. Vintage cycles were also on display and we were shown how penny-farthings should be ridden. Three-cranmog cars made it to this event, even though it was a last minute addition to the calendar.

The Hitchin Town Band, kept us entertained for the afternoon and for those who were in need of a little sustenance, there was a beer tent and cream teas were also being served.

For those with a bit more energy, on this warm and pleasant afternoon, there was a gymkhana, an Autoglym stall, and an auto jumble stall.

All in all a very pleasant afternoon.

STONEY STRATFORD CLASSIC CAR SHOW – SUNDAY 6 JUNE
By Michele Chapman

Sunday 6th June saw the 2nd Stony Stratford Classic Car show take place in the Old Market Square. This is becoming an annual gathering of classic car enthusiasts in the area displaying their fascinating cars and showing off their finest features!

Stony Stratford is located on the old Roman road of Watling Street, now the A5. In the height of the coaching era - the 18th and early 19th centuries, Stony Stratford was an important stopping-off point for mail and passenger coaches travelling between London and the North of England. This coaching history is the source of the supposed origin of the phrase ‘cock and bull story’. The Cock and The Bull were two of the main coaching inns in the town and the banter and rivalry between groups of travellers is said to have resulted in exaggerated and fanciful stories, which became known as ‘cock and bull stories’. The two hostelries still exist and we sampled a selection of their fine ales during the day.

The weather started off grey and overcast, but brightened up later in the afternoon and fortunately, the heavy showers which had been forecast, failed to arrive.

The Old Market square started filling up with cars from 9.30am. A total of 160 cars attended throughout the day which required some overflow car parking.

Eight Morgans were displayed, six from Cranmog and two from Folkmog. The Cranmog cars were a trio of +4’s and another trio of +8’s. Two Cranmog members, Steve and Moyra Isherwood in their +4 were interviewed at length by a member of the local MK press. We await with interest the publication of the article, it seemed quite an in depth interview!

There were some beautiful cars on display, a matching pair of his and hers’ Aston Martin DB9’s. Hers was a lovely shade of mint green. In fact, quite a range of Aston Martins were in attendance, another DB9, a DB7, a Vanquish and a couple of DB6’s, one of which was a fully restored 1966 SuperLeggera.

Other cars on show, included a number of Ferrari’s, a 1938 Austin - Big Seven, found in a barn and rebuilt, complete with a working gramophone in the back and a very loud drag car, so loud that is almost blew the ears of the unsuspecting black Labrador standing behind it as it started up! We think it was a black lab before it stood behind the exhaust, but who knows?

There were a few Jaguars, a 1965 ‘D’ type replica and the iconic ‘E’ types. Also, a beautiful dark blue XK150, which would have been my choice for the car I would have most liked to take home (apart from my own, of course). There was a rare 1949 black Humber Super Snipe, apparently these were built for the bank manager classes of the day and a 1936 Talbot Lago GP car, displaying information that this was a sister car to the winner of the 1936 French Grand Prix, driven by Jean - Pierre Wimille, (interesting aside - his first car at the age of 20 was a three- wheeled Morgan).

I think that perhaps the star of the show was a 1903 Oldsmobile which had travelled from Buckingham. Recently restored by its owner, the car had tiller steering, centre chain drive, a 1- cylinder engine that develops 5 bhp, two forward gears and one reverse and a top speed of about 25mph. It had a side crank so the driver could start the car from the front seat. Judging by the difficulty the driver had starting it, I am quite glad things have moved on since then. Apparently, an option when it was built was a mother-in-law seat for $25.

A great day out was had by all. It was also in aid of a good cause, all entrants paid a fee £3 to raise money for Willlen Hospice.

One for the calendar for future years.

Sunday 6 June
OxMog GET FLEECED
By Keith Hofgartner

On a less than promising Sunday morning on the 6th June several cars, including John and Hennie Cordner from CranMOG, set off for a run to the Fleece Inn at Bretforton near Evesham. This is a National Trust owned 17th Century Inn and in ‘Asparagus Country’. The menu proved to be an Asparagus Fest but was enjoyed by all, even if we did take shelter in The Barn. After an interesting route that appeared to take in Chipping Camden twice! several of the group made their way towards Upton House near Banbury, another National Trust property. Here, we were able to park our cars right outside this fine house and admire the gardens and Shell Oil marketing exhibition (and a cream tea!), apart from ‘Trixie’ who had to stay in the car!! Some of us even played snooker in the Games Room, a welcome departure from the more formal approach at other properties. Luckily we raised ‘Tops’ before we went to tea as we were welcomed with heavy rain. A wet drive home perhaps but a warm satisfied feeling inside sharing good food and good company. Anyone looking for a place to visit should put Upton House at the top of their list.

CREATON IN BLOOM WITH FOXMOG – SUNDAY 6 JUNE

This particular Sunday was obviously a very popular day for Morgan outings. About 8 Cranmog Morgans and Fred Collins’ superb Bedford Van joined Foxmog for the annual Creaton in Bloom event. There were steam engines on the village green and the gardens, as always were beautiful. The weather, however, was not. From about 3pm the heavens opened and there was much rushing about to cover the cars on display - more than 30 – including Porches’ and even a Mustang alongside the Morgans.

CRANMOG VAGABONDS AT
LE MANS 2010
By Dallas Jones

On Wednesday 9th June, 7 Cranmoggers met up with 6 cars from other centres, including a +4 Supersports wannerbe disguised as a 1956 TR3, en route for the 78th running of the Le Mans 24hr race. One car got as far as Bicester before the Otter switch failed, resulting in a radiator that got ‘otter and ‘otter. Lovely shade of anti freeze, Steve! A wire direct to the fan and bypassing the switch got things cool again and lasted over 500 miles. Yours truly called on the services of the RAC when DAZ failed to start after a refuel stop in Horndean. Technician arrived with 45 minutes left before our ferry departed from Portsmouth. Dodgy fuel pump electrics were diagnosed and temporary repairs made so we could get on our way. After an ‘interesting drive’ to the docks we made it just in time and were the last car loaded. Actual problem was caused by ME! When getting my leg over (the sleeping bag under my knees) after refuelling, I must have dislodged an electrical connector block above the footwell that fed the fuel pump. Get the cable ties out and get all those loose wires up high and out of the way.

After a smooth crossing on the good ship St Michel, we arrived in Caen and made our way to Argentan for a very welcome buffet breakfast. By now we had only lost one car that went the wrong way. Some cars then took the autoroute and some took the RN138 with all arriving at the infamous cow sheds on the Expo campsite before lunch on Thursday. We were grateful to find that an advance party from the south coast had reserved spaces for us with barrier tape and created Morgan Village. Tents were quickly erected and our Dutch neighbours surveyed. They seemed a happy bunch. They had a ten bedded motor coach with exterior sound system of mega wattage. Better than last years Danes we thought. How wrong can you be? During the evening we visited the circuit to watch the 2 practice sessions until midnight, just to get a flavour of what was to come on Saturday. On our return to camp, the Dutch ‘entertainment‘ started. Local Dutch shanties at mega decibels interspersed with explosions from a bird scarer leading up to a few rockets launched at 3 a.m. Oh, we were so amused and wished that little boy had not stuck his finger in their dyke. Who said we were there to relax?

On Friday we drove to St Saturnin for the Classic British Welcome. Hundreds of sports cars viewed by thousands of locals. This year was the year of the Corvette. The afternoon and evening was spent back at the circuit for a pit walk around and in Le Mans centre watching the Parade des Pilotes. Some of us had the pleasure of the Menu de Plaisir at a fantastic restaurant in nearby Ruaudin and were taken back to camp by the waitress after the taxi failed to return after dropping off 4 of our party. They must have upset the driver!

Race day dawned on Saturday and we watched the pre-race entertainment from our superb grandstand seats opposite the pits. The race started at 15.00hrs with awesome noise that made the spine tingle. Unfortunately Team Mansell only lasted 17 minutes after Nigel had a blow out that reshaped the Ginetta and the driver.

We enjoyed a great evening watching the England game on a TV rigged up to a sky dish in the cowsheds thanks to the ingenuity of the south coast mob. This was followed by a live UB40 concert at the circuit and then a few pints of Stella at the obligatory Tertre Rouge Bar at midnight. A rendezvous point for all Morganeers. All the while, the Audis and Peugeots were slugging it out on the track, together with every other car that was still running. The lonesome Jaguar had long since curled up and died. It made a change to see all 24hrs run in dry conditions and resulted in a record number of laps being recorded. Audi achieved a 1st, 2nd and 3rd as the Peugeots dropped out one by one. Of the 58 starters, 27 failed to finish this gruelling test of man and machine.

After breaking camp on a damp Monday morning, we headed for Pegasus Bridge and its museum of the D Day landings. This really did prove to be a bridge too far for 2 of the group who had their collars and wallets felt by the Alencon Gendarmes. They made big and I mean BIG donations to the local nick’s holiday fund for exceeding the speed limit by a considerable amount. They were not Cranmoggers, who naturally would never dream of doing a single kph over the limit. Our return trip on the good ship Normandie was very pleasant and a chance to have a refreshing shower before docking at 21.15 in Portsmouth.

I am tempted to do it all again next year if there is any interest. An early indication without any commitment at this stage would help. Just give me a ring or email me for any details. LM Virgins are always welcomed by the old stagers and John Barry is now a fully fledged Le Mans Vagabond who will be writing of his experience in Miscellany. Thanks also to Brian Wake, Steve Horn, Roger Gavan, Paul Roblett, Ted and Debbie, and Phil Whittall for making the trip so enjoyable. Not forgetting the considerably poorer brummie lads, Rob and Ian, Mel Chislett from Gavin and Stacey town, Simon and Susie from Exeter and the Scarboroughs from Derby, together with Adrian Clements and the south coast mob.

RAF MARHAM
THURSDAY 12 AUGUST

RAF Marham is holding a Friends and Families Day on Thursday 12 Aug 10. The event is an opportunity for the friends and families of people (both civilian and servicemen) who work at Marham to get a closer look at what actually goes on day to day on the Station. As well as access being opened to some of the work areas at Marham there are also numerous static displays including aircraft and classic and interesting vehicles; there is also a flying display.

RAF Marham is home to four Tornado Squadrons and is one of the largest RAF Stations in the United Kingdom. RAF Marham Squadrons were deployed for operations over Iraq during the Gulf War and maintained a continued presence there until mid 2009. Since October 2009 RAF Marham Squadrons have been deployed to Kandahar in Afghanistan in support of Operation HERRICK.

Steve Webster is currently serving at RAF Marham and is happy to coordinate access for any CRANMOG members who wish to attend, the only entrance fee being turning up accompanied by your Morgan and being willing for your Morgan to be part of the static display of classic/interesting vehicles. As Marham is an active RAF Station there is obviously some paperwork to be completed. All of the required paperwork can be found at: http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafmarham/events/famday2010.cfm . The link also details the contact at Marham who you should return the forms to; however, Steve is happy to coordinate all CRANMOG returns. Completed forms can be e-mailed to Steve on steven_webster@sky.com or handed over at the next CRANMOG monthly meeting. For those not familiar with deepest darkest Norfolk Marham is situated south of Kings Lynn and 12 miles east of Downham Market. Although it might be a bit of a treck for some, if the weather is good the drive across the Fens is quite pleasant with the bonus of a free flying display at the end. If there are any questions Steve is contactable by e-mail or on 01487 824158. Alternatively, contact Jacqui for a form.

Wheels in winslow
Monday 30 august
By Keith Hofgartner

Last year we attracted around fifty vehicles including fifteen Morgans from CranMog, FoxMog, OxMog, TVMog and TalkMorgan and elsewhere no doubt. Particularly satisfying was to promote the ‘Morgan Brand’ even more by including Morgan Centenary Raffle Tickets to all entrants of the event. We were also able to boost this significantly by sales to the general public after viewing our beautiful cars. I am very pleased to report that we raised over £ 610 for the Children in Need Morgan Raffle, so thanks for all that joined us last year. Unfortunately a Morgan did not take the ‘Best Vehicle in Show’ prize but a very nice 1959 MGA stole the prize (I was considered too biased to judge!). But none the less two of our local Morganeers went home with prizes awarded to their lovely dogs…well done. This year the event is being repeated with a larger display area and we hope to attract even more vehicles. Again it will be held on August Bank Holiday Monday (30th August) and we hope to see some of you again. Although we cannot repeat the Morgan Raffle we will be donating all proceeds to the Beds, Bucks and Oxon Air Ambulance Appeal.
